This week in Life Science, students had the opportunity to examine the stages of mitosis in onion root tip cells!

Why an onion root you ask—because roots are sites of rapid growth which cause the cells to divide more rapidly.

To examine the cells in the tip of the onion root, a thin slice of the root was placed onto microscope slides and stained so the chromosomes would be visible.

Today in AP Environmental Science, students began to construct their ecocolumns which will become a

self-contained and sustaining model of an ecosystem, and will contain a terrestrial and an aquatic biome. Stage 1 complete, more photos to come!

Congrats to our girls golf team! A veteran and a newcomer led the way as the LMP Lady Griffins won their opening girls varsity golf match on Tuesday at Daytona Beach Golf Club.

Happy Monday, #GriffinNation !

Here’s a look at what's happening around LMP this week.

For more information and reminders, be sure to read through the weekly LMP Newsletter.

Today, our second graders are learning to think like scientists.

Students added raisins to Sprite soda and observed that some of the raisins started to “dance” all around! By making a hypothesis, conducting an experiment, and making observations, students learned why this occurred.

Community School registration is officially open!

If you are looking for an exciting, after-school enrichment program to enroll your child in, be sure to take a look through our Fall 2021 Extracurricular Programs catalog. Available for all LMP students in grades PreK-3 through 5, we guarantee there is something for everyone!

Register before August 30 to secure your spot! To learn more and register: bit.ly/LMPcs21

Gobstopper candies are known for their bright colors, but what would happen if they were dissolved in water?

Let’s ask our fourth grade science students!

Students learned about the scientific process by making a hypothesis, conducting an experiment, and recording the data to determine the effect of water in the dissolving of Gobstoppers. Students were surprised to see the colors didn’t initially mix—instead the colors ran into each other and stopped. Take a look!

Kindergarten and first grade students are learning all about symmetry in Art Enrichment.

Things that are symmetrical are the same on both sides, like a butterfly! Students painted on one side of their paper and folded it in half to transfer the paint to the other side.

The second week of school is off to a great start here at LMP!

In Lower School, our kindergarten students are getting to know their classmates through “all about me” activities, fifth grade students are working on writing and producing segments for the Griffin News Nation (GNN), and third grade students are starting to practice appropriate bow holds in music class. 🎻

Last week, Mrs. Repp's class planned a bungee jumping excursion for Barbie.

Students collected data and studied the linear relationship between the rubber bands and the distance Barbie bungees to determine how many rubber bands were required for the ultimate drop!

PreK4 spent the week with their gingerbread friends Gingy and Ginger.

Inspired by the story, GINGERBREAD MAN LOOSE IN THE SCHOOL, when the gingerbread friends went missing students had to ask questions and follow the clues to find their missing gingerbread. Other hands-on learning included making gingerbread scented playdough and gingerbread man cookies!

Happening this week in Think Tank: students in grades K-3 focused on problem solving as a team.

Take a look to see how they did!

Overheard in Mrs. DiBisceglie’s Middle School Language Arts class: “I think I met my match!”

Students sat at tables arranged with candles and flowers…and of course, stacks of BOOKS! This was all part of a fun speed dating with books activity where students were introduced to fiction and nonfiction books of their choice and asked to fill out speed dating topics from their book’s point-of-view.

How does the shape of a boat change how much weight it can carry? Mr.

Martinez’s Middle School Coding and Robotics students are putting their boats, constructed out of aluminum foil, to the test. Students broke out into groups to come up with a design, then put them in water to see how many pennies each one could hold before sinking.

We are excited to begin production on our fall play, PETER AND THE STARCATCHER (a prequel to Peter Pan), starting with auditions this week!

Here are a few key details:

1️⃣ Auditions will be held on 8/12 and 8/13
2️⃣ Auditions are open to grades 6-12 (no prep needed!)
3️⃣ Show dates will be held on 10/1 and 10/2

For questions, please reach out to Ms. Corrie.

Today, our third graders are all about the team building.

Students get to learn how to work together, communicate effectively, and think creatively. It also gives our students the chance to get to know each other—and of course have fun! #lmpthirdgrade

Thank you to our SGA, teachers, principals, and GPA for making it all happen today for our students. We hope everyone has a great (and safe) summer.

Even though it’s the last week of school for our Griffins, the learning never stops here at LMP!

This week our Biology students are focused on learning about the circulatory system and the heart, examining and identifying the major structures of the external and internal heart anatomy.

Today, our 8th grade Physical Science classes had the opportunity to display their self-constructed toys as a way to demonstrate their understanding of the transfer of energy.

Our 7th grade Life Science students have been working on a special project called “The Age of Anthropoteeny” created by Ms.

Lyanne From TERRA High School in Miami and funded by National Geographic. The purpose of the project is for students to discover ways to communicate global issues through miniature art as part of their Ecology unit. Students researched multiple perspectives of a global issue, created a diorama to illustrate the issue, and wrote an essay detailing facts, repercussions, and global efforts to prevent the issue and create solutions.

And the winner of the Spaghetti Bridge Competition is…David Greene!

This week in robotics, our high school students explored the field of engineering by making bridges using one box of spaghetti as their primary building material, then testing their bridges to see how much weight they can hold before breaking. Here are the final stats:

Our 5th graders have been busy designing and making themed golf holes to compile a table top mini golf course.

Today they revealed the LMP Country Club Golf Course, inviting Lower School classes to come and play a round of golf!

Students followed criteria such as having a theme, at least one obstacle, and be achievable in 2-8 putts. Students prepared sketches of the side view and bird's eye view of their idea, and after 25 practice turns, students calculated mode, mean, median and range for each hole. Par was determined by subtracting 1 from the mean.

Our AP Studio Art students are working hard and playing even harder.

This class is all about personal expression, where each artist has a unique sustained investigation, in the media of their choosing. Artists in the class use experimentation, discovery, inventive thinking, critical analysis, problem-solving, and of course ART MAKING. Take a look!

This month, our PreK 3 & PreK 4 students celebrated their Fantastic Families event virtually!

Lunch with a Loved One took place via Zoom and students worked hard painting presents and practicing songs for their families.

Each class recorded their performance which will be emailed to families to enjoy, and the students will be bringing their special gifts home at the end of this week.

AP Capstone is an innovative program designed to help students develop critical skills needed to succeed in college and in their future career.

The program consists of two separate courses—AP Seminar and AP Research—allowing students to immerse themselves in topics that matter to them, while developing analytic, research, problem-solving and communication skills.

Recently in our AP Research class, seniors applied the skills developed in AP Seminar by identifying an issue, reading existing literature on it and identifying a gap where further research is needed. They then conduct that research and will present their final findings orally and in a written paper. 👏 #gogriffins

The Speech and Debate Team here at LMP is on fire!

Recently 5 members of the team, who had previously qualified at the Regional Tournament, competed this past weekend at the Florida Forensic League State Championship Tournament. After two days of preliminary competition, the Public Forum Debate Team of Juniors, Andrew Petrousky and Alex Vihlen advanced to the elimination bracket where they won their Octo-final debate before being eliminated in the Quarter Finals—finishing in 5th place in the State Tournament. 👏

A big CONGRATULATIONS also goes to Rhea Thakkar (Freshman), Minseo Kim (Junior), and Minh Lam (Senior) for their qualification and participation.

Recently our AP Seminar class delivered their team presentation. They first decided on a topic:

Fast Food and Its Influence on the US Versus Other Countries, and then each student researched it through the lenses of environmental, economic, medical, social and historic. After sharing their report with the group they then collaborated to produce a multimedia presentation.

Their performance exhibited depth, complexity and excellent presentation skills. We are so proud of them and look forward to them moving onto the Individual Written Argument and accompanying presentation!

At LMP we love traditions!

One of our newest traditions is the Legacy Robe, inspired by the Broadway tradition of the “Gypsy Robe” which was introduced to the LMP theatre program during Thespian Districts in November by Lauren Carlson, Officer of Thespian Troupe 7189. Each robe recipient adorns a small prop or charm to the garment to represent the play or musical and then passes it on to the next award winner for the next play.

This past weekend the LMP Legacy Robe was awarded by senior, Minh Lam, to 7th-grade student, Juliana Brown for her performance as Amy March in Little Woman. Minh Lam was the first recipient of the Legacy Robe for excellence in performance in Tuna Fish Eulogy, the one-act play being presented at the Florida Thespians State Festival in March. Please join us in congratulating Juliana Brown!

Congratulations to high school senior, Minh Lam who took second place in the Earth and

Environmental Sciences category at the Regional Science Fair, won a place to compete at the State Fair, and received the 2021 RICOH Sustainable Development Award!

"The research project aimed at looking into the potential of mushrooms as a potential solution for acid rain in the soil as mushrooms can also prove useful as an alternative food source.” -Minh Lam

Our LMP Chinese classes didn’t let a pandemic get in their way of celebrating the Chinese New Year.

This years celebration included making a video about Chinese songs, sports, the zodiac, and more; and a special school-wide lantern competition. All of the decorated lanterns were hung up at our US campus and symbolize a wish for a brighter future.

Mark your calendars! We look forward to seeing all of our LMP families at Lily’s Italian Ice & Dairy Bar on March 8 for Spirit Night.

We believe in developing 21st-century citizen leaders and are committed to building strong academic, social and emotional skills enriched with extracurricular activities.

Price is hosting a StoryWalk® here at LMP. Throughout the day students have the opportunity to walk around the track as a class and hear the pages of Malala's Magic Pencil by Malala Yousafzai come to life.

#WomensHistoryMonth is a celebration of women’s contributions to history, culture and society and has been observed annually in the month of March in the United States since 1987.

The actual celebration of Women’s History Month grew out of a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to culture, history and society organized by the school district of Sonoma, California, in 1978. Presentations were given at dozens of schools, hundreds of students participated in a “Real Woman” essay contest and a parade was held in downtown Santa Rosa.

A few years later, the idea had caught on within communities, school districts and organizations across the country. In 1980, President Jimmy Carter issued the first presidential proclamation declaring the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The U.S. Congress followed suit the next year, passing a resolution establishing a national celebration. Six years later, the National Women’s History Project successfully petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.

To learn more about Women's History Month please visit https://womenshistorymonth.gov/

Our Honors English II classes recently embarked on an exciting career change; transforming themselves from the amazing students we know and love to high-powered, persuasive lawyers.

They were tasked with providing a closing argument either prosecuting or defending Medea from MEDEA. To ensure that Medea's rights were upheld by LMP law, the jury of 5 teachers and administrators heard each side's argument and made a determination for Medea's guilt/innocence.

Our Junior and Senior Thespians are excited to extend a special thank you to Mr.

Marshburn for his video editing and formatting of their submissions to the Thespian State Competition. This year, we qualified to take 26 events to State making it the most in LMP’s Theatre history! Mr. Marshburn's expertise made an enormous difference in the quality of our video submissions during a "virtual performance" year, and this is just one example of the collaboration that makes Lake Mary Prep such an incredible school.

Last Friday we celebrated the Chinese New Year here at LMP!

To make it extra special, our World Language Department invited students to decorate their very own paper lantern which symbolizes the wish for a bright future.

Today is Random Acts of Kindness Day and what better way to celebrate than by spreading kindness in chalk!

Our students in Lower School Art Enrichment celebrated African American Literacy Day by reading the book Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold.

As they looked at the illustrations they noticed that Ringgold used pieces of fabric to create a quilted border, inspiring them to create their own rendition of Tar Beach using mixed media and fabric. Take a look!

Once a month, our Key Club members play trivia with a purpose via Zoom.

This month we used Freerice, a website run by the United Nations World Food Programme. For every question answered correctly, in areas like World Geography, Art History, and English Grammar, one grain of rice was donated to impoverished people around the world.

Check out this fun #ThinkTank activity! After learning all about magnets, our second graders created magnetic puppets and performed short skits on backgrounds that they designed and made themselves.

With a growth mindset and willingness to explore new areas of service, our Key Club and National Honor Society have partnered with Project Linus.

Project Linus has two over-reaching goals: First, to provide a sense of security, warmth and comfort, to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need through the gift of new homemade blankets created by volunteer "blanketeers” and secondly, to provide a rewarding service opportunity. As of last week, our Key Club and NHS have created over 30 "no-sew" blankets for donation!

Ever wonder what happens when AP Psychology and Honors Human Anatomy & Physiology classes join forces?

Dissection of sheep brains and cow eyes, of course. This hands-on lesson allowed our students to learn more about the nervous system and our senses.

Today, our 7th and 8th graders shared their research projects for the National History Day competition.

National History Day aligns with our school's mission to encourage students to strengthen 21st-century college and career-ready skills including time management, critical thinking, writing, and research. Additionally, our students were able to become writers, filmmakers, artists, and web designers as they created their own unique expressions of history. #WeAreLMP

When asked what inspired the creation of Pre-Calculus Buddy, Dylan said, “I was inspired by my precalculus teacher, Mr. Herold, to create this app, as a means to teach a computer how to solve precalculus problems. By teaching others the material, I found myself mastering it and providing an easier means for others to learn.”

Let the countdown begin for our amazing seniors who have 100 days until graduation.

Happy #100daysofschool from our lower school students!

Everyone came to school a little bit older and wiser today to celebrate.

In September of 1915, the Harvard-trained historian Carter G.

Woodson and the prominent minister Jesse E. Moorland founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History ( #ASNLH ), an organization dedicated to researching and promoting achievements by black Americans and other peoples of African descent. The group sponsored a national Negro History week in 1926, choosing the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass.

By the late 1960s, thanks in part to the civil rights movement and a growing awareness of black identity, Negro History Week had evolved into #BlackHistoryMonth.

Odyssey of the Mind is a problem solving program that promotes divergent thinking and teamwork

along with hands-on making and design. This year, we introduced the program to our middle school students and continue to be impressed by the amazing progress this creative and dedicated team has made as they prepare their long-term problem solution and the spontaneous challenge problem they will face in the competition! #WeAreLMP

Each month, our lower school counselor, Mrs. Robertson introduces a new character trait to our lower school students as part of the Character Education Program.

This months trait lesson is all about solidarity—where students have the opportunity to watch a story and share their own examples of solidarity.

During yesterday’s Spanish Club Meeting, students learned how to make the very popular and traditional dessert in the hispanic culture, Flan.

Be sure to check out our IG Story for the full recipe!

From November 1st to January 15th there are about 29 holidays observed by 7 of the world's major religions.

No matter which holiday your family observes, we wish you all a safe and joyous holiday season. See you next year!

In addition to helping our Furry Friends through donations to the Central Florida Humane Society,

Key Club also made it part of their mission to help families who may be struggling this holiday season. Through the use of a "Reverse Advent Calendar", Key Club gathered over 700lbs of non-perishable food items for the Second Harvest Food Bank in Orlando. The Lake Mary Prep Key Club is grateful for the incredible generosity of the LMP staff, families, and students and it is their wish that everyone has a safe, healthy, and happy holiday!

The Lake Scary 5K for United Cerebral Palsy of Central Florida underwent many challenges this year

due to COVID-19 but with a little creativity, we were able to find new ways to make our event pandemic-friendly. This year we featured a virtual run from home option with racers from four different countries, and with everyone’s support, we were able to raise $6,132 for UCP. We look forward to seeing everyone at next year's event!

This holiday season, give the gift of memories that last a lifetime.

Yearbooks are on sale now at a special price of $75 through January 31, 2021. Order online at yearbookforever.com or for those paying with cash/check, please make it out to Lake Mary Preparatory School and either drop it off at the front desk or to Mr. Swafford in Room 5.

This week, Spanish Club had their final meeting of 2020 where they enjoyed working on collaborative art together outside.

Inspired by their own experiences, each student drew what came to mind when reflecting on the hispanic culture. Feliz navidad y prospero año nuevo!

After months of developing research and presentation skills, our AP Seminar students conducted their individual, multimedia presentations yesterday.

As part of the learning process, they were able to receive feedback from classmates and administrators to help them prepare for the next presentation scheduled for April 2021 and will contribute to each student's AP Capstone score and overall success in the class. AP Capstone teacher, Mr. John Niven, is very proud of this dedicated group of students!

Our PreK and Kindergarten students have been learning about a variety of holidays celebrated around

the world including New Year’s Eve and Christmas in Australia, England and Mexico, Diwali in India, Hanukkah in Israel, and the African-inspired holiday Kwanzaa. We’ll also be sharing holiday celebrations in Sweden, Peru, and China, as well as learning about the holiday Ramadan.

Pre-K students have been busy practicing for their Land of Sweets concert, and today they got to show off their musical talent and movement skills in an adorable performance.

‘Tis the season for “ugly” holiday sweaters here at Lake Mary Prep!

It’s hard to pick a favorite when they are all so good.

MS Virtual Game Night happening now! #FridayGameNight #LMP

Each year our school produces a first-class yearbook that highlights our students, staff, and the events and activities throughout the year.

Whether your graduate is finishing Kindergarten, entering high school, or heading off to college, an ad in the LMP yearbook is a sure way to show your love and appreciation for all of their hard work.

All pictures and payment must be turned in no later than February 1, 2021. To order: bit.ly/LMPyb2021

Our Lower School art students are hard at work creating themed ornaments for our annual Festival of Trees!

Each grade level hand-selected a theme for their tree, and this year’s themes include Sugar and Spice, Dr. Seuss, Rocket Away, Boho-ho, Super Mario, Star Wars, and 2020. Be sure to check back for more information on the Festival of Trees!

It’s time to break out those holiday sweaters! We’re encouraging everyone to wear their favorite “ugly” holiday sweater to school tomorrow, December 11.

We are thrilled to announce that Dylan Harle has been named the winner of the 2020 Congressional App Challenge for @repstephmurphy district!

Light up your holiday by joining us tomorrow night from 5pm-7pm in front of NewCity Coffee Co.

Be sure to tell your family, friends, and neighbors so they can come by and learn more about Lake Mary Preparatory School!

Last year, teachers were asked to select students who exemplified the traits that lead to success in the classroom to receive our Academic Excellence Award.

This award recognizes students who showed a passion and commitment to excellence in a specific subject area, and students who worked tirelessly to improve their learning and development.

With our health and safety protocols in place, we were able to honor our students by presenting them with their award along with recognizing them for their service, leadership and honor roll. Go Griffins!

Here's a little treat to help BAKE your holiday a little sweeter! 🍪

Pre-order your box of freshly baked chocolate chip (gluten friendly) cookies now thru December 15. To order, log onto mykidsspending.com and select your child's name and preferred pickup date.

Students found it hard to keep their balance as they wrapped up their Forensic Toxicology unit with special guest, Officer Yielding from the Lake Mary Police Department.

Officer Yielding gave students the opportunity to wear special impairment goggles specifically designed to give them a simulated experience, showing first-hand the dangers of underage drinking and drunk driving.

Last month our Key Club sponsored a Pet Food Drive to benefit the Seminole County Humane Society—and the donations came pouring in!

Today, we had the pleasure of dropping the donations off, which will go towards helping take care of our furry friends in need. We are so proud of our students and the way they care for their community.

Last weekend our Duo team, Minh Lam and Lauren Carlson, competed simultaneously in our local Orlando League, taking 1st place, and in Ft.

Lauderdale taking 3rd place in the Invitational tournament. Freshman Rhea Thakkar placed 4th at the Invitational and during the NFCFL Orlando meet, Katie Rose Mundale-Jones and Sofia Mohring took 2nd place in Public Forum debate, making them Lake Mary Prep’s first all-female team!
👏
Joining them on the podiums were Jandy Ngyuen who placed 2nd in Declamation, Ben Barth who placed 3rd in Novice Congress, and Blake Curtis who placed 4th in Novice Original Oratory. Way to go Griffins!

Don’t have dinner plans? LMP Chick-fil-A Spirit Night is tonight, November 18 from 4:30-7:30 PM at the Lake Mary Blvd location.

Be sure to let your cashier know as you go through the drive-thru or in "notes" if ordering on the app that your order supports LMP Spirit Night. See you there!

This past weekend, our Caring for Kids Club volunteered at New Hope for Kids to help with landscaping and cleanup efforts.

Way to go Griffins!

Our Spanish 1B students recently completed their Second Unit of the year.

In this unit, students were able to make cultural connections and comparisons then apply this knowledge to create a new product that’s beneficial for the LMP community. Check out this fun tour of Lake Mary Preparatory school—in Spanish!

Mrs.

Benefiel and our National Junior Honor Society students get creative with community service during a pandemic—taking precautions like keeping the group small, wearing masks, and volunteering outside. This year, the NJHS has adopted Sanlando Park and have committed to monthly clean-ups. We’re so proud of our Griffins for making a difference in our community!

Today is #WorldKindnessDay ! As part of our Character Education Program, Mrs.

Robertson, our lower school counselor, stopped by the classroom to discuss the character trait “Kindness.” Students got to share how random acts of kindness impact the world around us and how they can display kindness to others.

CONGRATULATIONS to Mrs. Corrie and our Senior Thespians!

They were able to submit 16 events to Districts this year, and our students earned 10 Superiors, 3 Excellents and 3 Goods. We are so proud of this incredible accomplishment and look forward to seeing our Juniors and Seniors take a total of 26 events to the State competition in March!

Our Key Club is sponsoring a Pet Food Drive to benefit Seminole County Humane Society through November 19th, 2020.

COVID-19 has been hard on families in Seminole County, with many finding themselves unable to afford to care for their furry friends. Items needed are bags of food, treats, beds and blankets. Donation boxes can be found outside the lower and upper school.

Dear LMP Community: We are currently monitoring Tropical Storm Eta.

At this time, school will be open for tomorrow. Any changes will be communicated as quickly as possible. As a reminder, we do follow Seminole County Public Schools in regards to school closures. Thank you and be safe!

To honor the men and women who work to protect and serve this great nation, our Lake Mary Prep Symphonic Band, led by Mr.

William Carmichael, paid tribute to veterans around the world with a special performance of our National Anthem.

We had the honor of having @chrisnikic as a guest speaker at the beginning of this school year, and today Chris became the first person with Down syndrome to finish an Ironman.

From all of us at Lake Mary Prep—CONGRATULATIONS, Chris! #onepercentbetter #ironman #ironmantri

Our Jr. Thespians made us very proud at Districts this year.

We were able to submit 14 entries, and our students earned 9 Superior and 5 Excellent ratings! These students have shown tremendous growth over the past year and we look forward to their bright future, especially as they move on to States in the spring—a very exciting accomplishment.

During the month of October our Breast Cancer Awareness Club had the honor of sponsoring events to help raise funds for AdventHealth Eden Spa, a safe haven for women affected by cancer.

Today, our students presented a check for $10,000 to AdventHealth Foundation Central Florida which would not have been possible without the support from our amazing school community!

This past weekend the Lake Mary community came together for our 9th Annual Lake Scary 5K run/walk for cerebral palsy.

Over the years, almost $100,000 has been raised to benefit
@ucpofcentralflorida and make a difference in the lives of children with cerebral palsy.

#NativeAmericanHeritageMonth has evolved from its beginnings as a week-long celebration in 1986,

when President Reagan proclaimed the week of November 23-30, 1986 as "American Indian Week." Every President since 1995 has issued annual proclamations designating the month of #November as the time to celebrate the culture, accomplishments, and contributions of people who were the first inhabitants of the United States.

This month is a time to celebrate the rich and diverse cultures, traditions, and histories of #Native people. Native American Heritage Month is also an opportune time to educate the general public about the challenges Natives have faced both historically and in the present, and the ways in which tribal citizens have worked to conquer these challenges.

To learn more about #NativeAmerican Heritage Month visit https://nativeamericanheritagemonth.gov/

Our Pre-Algebra students got to explore scale factor and its relation to a scale drawing using Lake Mary Prep blueprints!

This fun exercise will help the students as they begin to work on their next performance task, a “Tiny House” project, which connects proportionality to real world application.

Observed in October each year, #DownSyndromeAwarenessMonth was started by the National Down Syndrome Society in the 1980’s.

By spreading awareness, advocacy, and inclusion throughout the community, the month is a time to celebrate individuals with Down syndrome and make people aware of their abilities and accomplishments.

During our pre-planning week, we had an amazing young man come out and speak with our staff about his life's mantra of getting 1% better each day. Chris Nikic is 20 years old with Down Syndrome and has accomplished so pretty amazing things in his life. Chris is asking us all to assist him in his mission to raise awareness for Down Syndrome. By accepting the 1% better challenge for the next 30 days we can experience the magic of getting 1% better each day.

Accept the 1% better challenge by visiting Chris's website for more information.
