Warning: this is a long post. I have been pondering about writing something about what happened last weekend.
Yealiya competed at Freaks of Nature bouldering comp at Onsight Rock Gym in Knoxville, TN last weekend. Her total score was high enough to get her in the open finals round (top 8) but she was excluded from the finals due to her age (She is 10, three years too young by their rule). She started a petition herself, which stated that she was willing to forfeit her first place in Youth division to have an opportunity to compete in the finals. And she obtained many signatures from her supporters. Unfortunately, the organizers didn’t change their mind. Later we learned that her score from the redpoint round was the 3rd highest score amongst all female climbers. I was very proud of her for her hard climbs and for her initiative. It was an exciting story but a little sad. Fortunately, this weekend, Send City sport climbing comp at Stone Summit Climbing Gym gave this story a perfect happy ending. Yealiya scored high enough to compete in the finals at Send City. She was climbing with some top climbers in the nation, such as Ashima Shiraishi, Zach Galla, Zander Waller. During the finals, everyone was cheering for her for every quickdraw she clipped and every high point she reached. Kyra Condie personally congratulated her and signed her chalk bag after the comp. She was totally psyched.
